Grenzend aan de Leuvehaven tussen het Maritiem museum en de hoogbouw ‘de Coopvaert’ bevindt zich Plein 1940 met daarop het bekende herdenkingsbeeld van Zadkine ‘de verwoeste stad’. Het plein is begin 2008 opnieuw ingericht met als uitganspunten: openheid, toegankelijkheid en ruimte voor het beeld. Een brede verlichte trap nodigt de bezoeker uit om op het plein te komen waar het beeld in de toekomst vanaf 100m hoogte zal worden aangelicht, waardoor het letterlijk in het ‘spot licht’ zal staan.
